What Is RTK GNSS and When Is Centimetre Accuracy Needed?
Satellite positioning is often associated with everyday navigation, but professional applications can require much higher accuracy. In surveying, agriculture, construction and machine control, even small positioning errors may have a significant impact.
What does RTK mean?
RTK stands for Real-Time Kinematic. The technology enables a GNSS receiver to use correction information to determine its position with significantly greater accuracy than conventional standalone satellite positioning.
Correction data can be delivered to the field receiver through a suitable communication connection and combined with the receiver's own satellite observations.
When is centimetre-level accuracy important?
High positioning accuracy can be essential for surveying and stakeout applications. In precision agriculture it can support repeatable machine guidance, while in construction it can assist measurement, positioning and inspection workflows.
Accurate positioning is also increasingly important in robotic and autonomous systems that need reliable knowledge of their location.
What affects GNSS measurement quality?
Several factors can influence positioning performance, including satellite geometry, nearby obstacles, the stability of correction data and the capabilities of the receiver itself.
RTK as part of a complete system
High-precision positioning is often more than a single device. A complete workflow may include a GNSS receiver, field controller, correction service, communication connection and data-processing software.
A properly configured RTK solution can make professional fieldwork faster, more repeatable and more accurate.
